Big change happened across schools in several Canadian provinces for the 2024-2025 school year, with smartphone bans coming into force.<\/p>\n

The bans vary, but all have the same goal of cutting down on distractions in the classroom and encouraging safe use of social media. Here, we look at the details and results so far.<\/p>\n

Where are the restrictions in place in Canada?<\/h3>\n

With 87% of Canadian teenagers using smartphones, concerns about their impact on academic performance and mental health have led to several provinces implementing stricter cellphone policies. Restrictions are currently in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia.<\/p>\n

Canadian provinces are taking varied approaches to cellphone use in schools. Some, like Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan, ban them during class for all K-12 students. Others, such as Ontario, use a tiered system based on grade level. New Brunswick expects phones to be silenced and stored during class. Alberta and B.C. are allowing school districts to create their own policies, though provincial standards exist.<\/p>\n

Within provinces, policies can differ significantly, with some districts focusing bans on younger students or limiting use to non-instructional time.<\/p>\n

Were the bans supported?<\/h3>\n

A large majority of Canadians support banning cellphones in public school classrooms to reduce distractions in the learning environment. Overall, 80% of Canadians support a ban, with the highest support from Quebec at 88%. Only 5% were completely opposed to the ban.<\/p>\n

There were concerns though, not least from teachers, due to the bans being inconsistent not only amongst provinces, but between school years.<\/p>\n

According to the Mission City Record, one of the major concerns that emerged from that feedback was putting the onus on teachers. The outlet quoted a teacher who said that without consistent boundaries, students will continue to play teachers off each other.<\/p>\n

What does the research say?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Smartphone adoption in Canada has grown \u2013 and still is growing \u2013 at quite a rate. The Statista figure from April 2022 is that 87% of Canadians between 12- and 17-year-olds use smartphones.<\/p>\n

Research suggests this high dependency is linked to reduced attention spans and a decline in mental health. Psychologist Dr. Todd Cunningham explained that such\u00a0distractions could hinder learning, leading to poorer academic performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Further afield, other countries are finding the same by removing cellphones from the classroom \u2013 improved\u00a0\u5b66\u696d\u6210\u7e3e<\/a>,\u00a0reduced anxiety<\/a>\u00a0and more social interaction are just a few of the benefits noticed.<\/p>\n

How are school cellphone bans going so far?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Anecdotal feedback appears to be positive with the cellphone bans. CBS News covered the story, where they interviewed educators and students.<\/p>\n

Ishaal Ali, a Grade 12 student acknowledge younger students were spending too much on the phones but believed older students should be able to self-regulate more, saying they should be allowed the responsibility to decide \u2018the phone or my grades.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grade 9 student Liam Sache said after a teacher took away phones in class, that it was \u201cprobably the best I\u2019d ever done in a math class\u201d.<\/p>\n

This was backed up by Liam\u2019s school\u2019s Head of Maths, with Robin Blanchard commenting that students are \u201cMuch more on task \u2026 they\u2019re very much engaged in lessons.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n\n
